Taxes 2015Due to budget cuts and the increasing number of people filing their taxes online, the IRS and state revenue agencies have indicated that they will no longer be delivering as many forms and reproducible booklets to libraries across the country. The Hayner Public Library District will receive a copy of the federal reproducible tax forms and instructions. Copies of these reproducible forms and instructions may be made on our copy machines; state and federal tax forms may be printed from the above websites at any Hayner Library location at a cost of 15¢ per page for black/white printouts or 30¢ per page for color printouts.

Please note: The library has no control as to when we will receive the federal reproducible forms. We order the reproducible forms several months in advance and we receive them from the IRS printing office per their delivery schedule (which is unannounced). 

 

 

Hayner Library Databases Provide Help to All Ages

DatabasesHayner Library has a wide array of online resources to help teachers, students, and anyone interested in topics for research or for self-improvement. Library databases, sometimes called online resources or online databases, are organized collections of electronic information that allow you to search for a particular topic, article, or book in a variety of ways (e.g., keyword, subject, author, title). When you search one of these databases, you are not searching the Web; you’re searching pre-selected material that is the equivalent of what you might find on a library shelf in print format.
Subscription databases consist of published journals, magazines, documents, newspapers, books, image collections, and more. Hayner Library has purchased subscription access to a variety of online databases. These resources are accessed online through the Hayner Library website at www.haynerlibrary.org.
 
Why do libraries subscribe to databases?
 
• To help students doing research papers by providing accurate, authoritative articles on a wide variety of topics. Each article found is cited and can be converted to a selected citation style (MLA, APA, etc.), making it easy for students to copy and paste the citation into their papers.
 
• To offer access to thousands of articles from hundreds of journals and magazines, many more than a library could physically have on hand.
 
• To offer patrons a quick, easy way to obtain reliable information on topics of interest.
 
Hayner Library subscribes to more than 20 subscription databases. Some of these databases are as follows:
 
  • Biography Reference Center is a comprehensive collection of full-text biographies.
  • Literary Reference Center offers book summaries, author information, and more.
  • Academic Search Premier offers peer-reviewed, full-text journal articles from many academic areas, including biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and religion.
  • History Reference Center offers articles, images, videos, and primary source documents on American and world history.
  • Science Reference Center includes biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, environmental science, health, medicine, life science, physics, scientists, and technology.
  • Points of View Reference Center provides students with a series of essays presenting multiple sides of current controversial issues.
  • Auto Repair Reference Center has repair information for model years 1954 to 2010.
  • NoveList K-8 Plus is a reader’s advisory for fiction and nonfiction. K-8 is designed for teachers and kids. Features Grab and Go book lists, Picture Book Extenders.
  • ConsumerReports.org provides the most current reviews of consumer products.
  • Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center offers detailed “how-to” instructions and creative ideas for hobby enthusiasts provided from leading hobby and craft magazines.
  • Home Improvement Reference Center has articles, videos, and images to help homeowners tackle home repairs safely.
  • Legal Information Reference Center provides full text for many of the top consumer legal reference books and contains thousands of legal forms.
 
These reliable, accurate information sources are free with your Hayner Library card number. You can access them from home or within the library at www.haynerlibrary.org by clicking Online Resources on the home screen.

Join the Friends of the Library

Friends of the LibraryExciting news from the Friends of Hayner Library: We are letting our Friends and our community know that we are now meeting on Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 to sort books. This is a great chance for those of you who can’t meet in the daytime to come and help get our donated books sorted and shelved and generally get ready for our book sales.
 
As you know, the money collected from book sales helps the library purchase things to help make it the best library around!
 
Please consider joining us on Tuesday evenings or on Monday mornings from 9:30 until noon. It’s lots of fun, and you’ll find friendly people who share a love of books. The Friends of Hayner Library building is located at 327 State Street, Alton.
 
A change of officers includes Carole Conley as President, Susan Wilkinson as Secretary, and David Zimmerman as Treasurer.
 
Also, we are busy getting ready for our spring book sale on May 8 and 9.

Check Out a Telescope at the Library!

ScopeBeginning June 1, 2015, you can check out an Orion StarBlast 4.5" Reflector telescope from either the Hayner Downtown Library or the Hayner Library in Alton Square Mall. The library, through an agreement with the St. Louis Astronomical Society, acquired two of the telescopes in May.

Supplementing the library's purchase, two Alton astronomers and St. Louis Astronomical Society members, Mr. Eddie Agha, staff astronomer at The Nature Institute, and Mr. Steve Sands, staff astronomer for the Watershed Nature Center, have each purchased a telescope to donate to the library collection, as has Ms. Patti Brown, Education Director at The Nature Institute, bringing the total number of available telescopes to five.

Each telescope captures the equivalent amount of light of 250 human eyes. Each has a zoom eyepiece, which gives a range of magnifications from 20 power to 60 power and provides a large field of view spanning from one degree to over two degrees. You will be able to obtain clear observations of the craters on our Moon, Jupiter and its moons, Saturn and its rings, and the brighter star clusters and nebulae.

The telescopes may be checked out for up to seven days by adult Hayner Library card holders. A picture ID must also be presented. A refundable $50 deposit is required for checkout. The telescopes come with a learning kit and everything you need to start your stargazing adventure. Enjoy the great outdoors and night skies with your family and friends.

Also, to further your astronomical adventures, you can attend a free stargazing program offered by The Nature Institute in Godfrey, Ill., on the third Thursday of every month at 8:00 p.m. More information can be found at www.thenatureinstitute.org.

Telescope Workshops Available

Executive Director Bernadette Duvernoy is proud to announce a partnership between The Hayner Public Library District and The Nature Institute Astronomy Association. The Association will host astronomy workshops and activities every third Thursday in the Talahi Lodge at The Nature Institute at 2213 South Levis Lane, Godfrey, Ill.

Starting July 16 at 8:30 p.m., the public will now have a chance to learn more about constellations, stars, the moon, and many other aspects of astronomy. Be sure to come to the library and check out some books to brush up on your knowledge.

Ms. Duvernoy would also like to thank Eddie Agha, Steve Sands, Patti Brown, the St. Louis Astronomical Society, and all their volunteers for all their hard work and for donation of the library's telescopes.

If you haven't enrolled in 2015 coverage by February 15, you generally can't buy Marketplace health coverage for 2015 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. 

During 2015 Open Enrollment, if you enroll or change plans:

• Between the 1st and 15th days of the month, your coverage starts the first day of the next month.
• Between the 16th and the last day of the month, your coverage starts the first day of the second following month. So if you enroll on January 16, your coverage starts on March 1.
• Between February 1, 2015, and the deadline of February 15, 2015, your 2015 coverage begins March 1, 2015.

You can enroll in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) any time of year. If you own or operate a small business, you can start offering coverage to your employees at any time.

Wowbrary is a nonprofit service that provides you free weekly emails and RSS feeds about your local library's most recent acquisitions. We've found that users of Wowbrary emails are both awed and excited when they discover their local public library's abundance of new books, DVDs, and CDs.

Our service reaches both avid library patrons and those who haven't used libraries in years. Wowbrary serves as an attractive online version of the new-book shelf, but one that spans all library branches, includes items that are checked out, and comes by convenient email or RSS for those who don't visit the library website or facilities regularly. Attention Teachers! New Resource at Hayner Library to Help Students Understand the Mississippi River

Our Mississippi, an educational activities workbook about the Upper Mississippi River, was donated to Hayner Library by the local U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is geared towards students in grades 5–6. The book covers topics about the watershed, ecology, history, and commerce of the Mississippi River.

Copies of this book are located in the children’s department at the Downtown library, and the Alton Square library. Come check out this excellent resource, and discover the mighty wonders of the Upper Mississippi River!
